Our History
They Said It Wouldn't Last!

How It All Began!
In 1998 Kyle Slaughter, owner of Slaughters Men's Store, approached Al Smith about selling his building. After decades of successfully running his family business he was ready to retire. It was extremely important that the building that bared his family name be put to good use. He expressed a lot of confidence in Al's company's ability to transform the building into a successful business.

Vision Meets Reality!
With the closing of Dunn's Toy Store and Lunch Counter, Al felt there was a need for a restaurant to serve breakfast and lunch to the downtown community. He also decided to move their ice cream counter out of the chocolate factory next door and put it into the cafe'. While the lunch business was good from the start it quickly became obvious that there wasn't much demand for breakfast and they were going to have to to scoop a lot of ice cream to pay the bills. So within the first year they moved the ice cream counter back into the chocolate factory and replaced it with a bar. Then they stopped serving breakfast and started serving dinner. This was a painstakingly expensive transformation. At the time no one was having much success serving dinner downtown. In the beginning, Al spent many lonely nights wondering what it would take to get people to leave their suburban homes and drive downtown to dine with them. They had great food, a warm atmosphere with friendly service but given their location that just didn't seem to be enough.

Music To Our Ears!
One night while dining in a restaurant in Downtown Deland, Al heard a Jazz band lead by Don Nedobeck. The place was packed and so he decided to give music a try in the cafe'. Music is a main passion in Al's life and it was extremely important to him that they concentrate on using quality musicians and that the music be something people could listen to while eating dinner. The caliber of musicianship in the area is incredible. Angell & Phelps really enjoys getting to know the musicians, their passion, and dedication to their craft while providing a unique dining experience that one would only expect to find in a big city.
